Designed for changemakers

The College of Communication, Media, Design and Information was created in 2015 as a response to a changing world—one in which traditional disciplinary boundaries were disappearing in response to changes in media, technology and communication.

Our majors and degree programs are not about single fields of study. Through their classes, students are challenged to seek opportunities in the areas where those traditional boundaries come together and intersect. That perspective makes them not just creators, but innovators who can read the landscape, assess new trends and recommend forward-looking strategies that solve the increasingly complex problems faced by builders, designers, influencers, programmers, journalists and others.

CMDI research and creative work also looks to discover knowledge in, and direct creative energy toward, these areas of intersection. How can generative artificial intelligence be used ethically? How do we trust our eyes in a time of deepfakes? Can the way we tell stories help organizations advance sustainability? How does building community influence the success of designs, products and businesses? Can we measure In our research labs, creative centers and studios, faculty collaborate across disciplines to investigate these and other opportunities.

Think

We challenge our students to think critically—about the tools they use, media they consume and messages they absorb—in order to develop practical solutions to vexing problems and to be informed participants in our society.

Innovate

Classes encourage experimentation with new ideas and emerging technologies, preparing creators to rapidly evaluate new methods, techniques and styles, and pivot when appropriate.

Create

Whether their medium is words, images, designs, blueprints, videos, sound, code or some combination of those, CMDI is where our students discover their voice and master the tools needed to share it with the world.
